Sketches Series
The Sketches Series is the first official series from Studio Eummae. This collection of works represents some of my first explorations of Suminagashi, using simple Yasutomo Hosho sketch paper using red and black sumi ink. This paper gives a much stronger and more vibrant color pallet, though there is more tendency for the inks to run on the paper. Each piece is then further stretched and backed on a sheet of high quality, handmade double-thickness Chinese Xuan paper, using traditional Chinese wet mounting techniques, giving each print a much thicker feel than my later series prints, almost like card stock. Out of dozens of works, seven were selected to be a part of this official collection. Although I no longer use this particular paper for Suminagashi, it is a great low-cost starting paper for anyone who wants to try the art, and has actually led to some of my favorite pieces. (Note: the actual paper color is a bright white tone, which the pictures do not capture well.)
